Negative battery cable grounded on engine block or frame??

Negative battery cable grounded on engine block or frame??
I have always thought that the negativfe terminal cable was grounded to the engine but after workin on my car this weekend, I checked mine (it needs replacing) and it is about 8 inches long connected right to the frame of the car....Do I need to change?
