Best bet is still 5k intervals or the use of an oil extractor. At least the dealer has some new products for those interested.

Default So they dropped the Syntec 5W40...

from their approved list. What's that tell us about the quality of that product?

I'll stick with the GC 0W30 for the 1.8T Avant, and the Elf Excellium LDX NF 5W40 for the A6 4.2.

Default

dropping syntec could be due to a million of other reasons, such as wholesale price

Default Updating the OE service oil doesn't mean the old one is bad, just that the new one is better.

And that's not even a hard rule. Look at Ur-German Syntec SLX 0w-30, Porsche approved 30 weight that works incredible.

This oil is more for new VW504/057 service, low sulphated ash is not always a benefit. Still, old specs are consolidated and formula tweaked, it is what it is and VW thinks it's good for their needs. It's just happenstance that old Syntec 5w-40 was sucky, just in comparison to the 0w-30 on the shelf right next to it as well as m1 and others.

Default Depends on your climate. 0w/5w/10w/15w-40 depending on how cold it is.Auto-Rx would be the 1st step.

Auto-Rx with dino oil, 10w or 15w-40 to clean the engine nicely. Check the whole PCV system then finalize your oil selection to High-Miles 10w-40 like MaxLife or GTX HM, or 5w-40 synth, like Mobil 1 Turbo Truck Diesel (aka Delvac-1) 5w-40 or Shell Rotella T Synth 5w-40, both at WalMart. If you need a 15w-40 to keep burning rate down, I like Mobil Delvac 1300S 15w-40 or Chevron Delo, also at WalMart.

Do the Auto-rx, it's as cheap as a synth oil fill and will actually provide some usuable function.

Default For further info, this oil should be the same as Castrol Edge 5w-30 (Link to Castrol UK)

A thick 30 made specificly for Euro apps requiring a specifc dynamic visc in centi-poise at +150c, the High-Temp/High-Shear rating >3.5cP. For them, going to 30 weight is like when many US market vehicles went to 20 weight. (like my current car) Euro service usually = 40 weight, like all those VW 502 oils. Take SynPower for instance, in the US blend is is a thin 30 at 10cSt, in the Euro blend it is 12cSt@+100c, making sufficient HT/HS at +150c. That's how it made the older 502 list, in error. I see they still can't get that list right. Shell should just go ahead and test against it, since Rotella Synth is so widely distributed it. They should at least claim the euro A# spec, since it's a self-reported spec.

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/productdetailmin.do?categoryId=9014072&content Id=7027058</a

Default No RP is approved for Audis by Audi(VW)

They are too cheap to run the tests
