Default New member, transmission question

I have searched a fair amount and haven't found out to much information on pitted 1st gears. I am pretty sure that is the issue I am having on my 96 2.8. It makes a pretty good humming sound and I was curious if there is anything I can do to tone it down a bit on the sound. Such as different oils or additives? I understand that this can only be fixed by replacing the transmission. Is this true? I will get some pics of my A4 up in the thread so everyone can check it out. Other then the transmission I love this car.

Are you sure the noise is from the trans?

Oh yeah, I'm sure. It's it first gear only when on the gas. 2-5 sound normal 1st just makes a whirling sound like a bad bearing. From everything I have read it points to a pitted 1st gear. I'm hoping this is fixable.

It is fixable, but the cheapest route is to swap out the trans with a good used one.

And that's going to cost a lot in itself. I'm pretty sure I can do the install though. Is it something that I can just live with or will it eventually fail completly?

When I had my 96, I lived with it. Not worth the trouble in my opinion. If you pulled it apart, you'd be shocked by how such minor damage can make so much noise. If fluid level is correct, no danger of failure.

I read that the damage is small but causes a loud sound. So there isn't and product I can dump into the tranny and quite it down a little bit?
