D1 is unique not because of it's additives, but it's ester base oil which should liquify sludge.

I use Mobil 15-50 in my old Porsche 911 but I wouldn't put in in my A4

Porsche North America say that 0-40 is okay for all Porsches but virtually all the air-cooled guys use 15-50

I'm using 5-40 in the A4

so, you're willing to waste 2k miles of use from the correct oil to spend less on the wrong oil?

do the math and see how you'd be wasting money

Keyword <old> Porsche. I bet you'd be happy with Delo or Delvac 15w-40 in that giant sump.

My recipe for cheapest Syn fill =1G SynPower 5w/10w-30, $15 from Advance + 1 Valv SynPower Oil Treat

New SM-spec oils have additive level limits, so they use better base oil to attain the performance for the test sequence. Adding VSOT gives a nice solid bump in visc and additives. The best of both worlds, best base stock and an additive bump beyond API limits for enviormental reasons.
