The '98 and '99 model year are supposed to be extremely reliable, and a great used car buy. I think it was good ol' Consumer Reports that "highly recommended" them. So far my '99 kicks ****, although I've only had it a few days.

I bought a '99 1.8tqms off eBay. I live in Sac, CA and the car was in Boston, so I had to buy sight unseen (aside from some pics the dealer took). I called Audi and asked if any recalls had been performed, etc. I also called my local Audi dealer and asked them to fax me the service records on the car. (some dealers may not do this, I happen to have a great dealer in Sac) I called the Audi service dept and asked them of any issues they could think of, I also called a reputable tuner in my area (2bennett audimotive) and asked their opinion. I did a carfax check and anything else I could think of. The car had fairly high miles for a 99 (57000) but this meant that it was most likely highway miles. I also did a background check on the dealer and called the Boston Better Business Bureau. I didn't get any red flags on my research and ended up buying the car. Longest month of my life waiting for paperwork and shipping, but I am extremely happy now and love the car one month into our relationship. For $18000, I think I scored.
Good luck.
Good luck.
