You could label the surface, and simply place the socket down and it would stay in place... I personally use rails because I like to be able to bring my tools with me to friends, track, etc.

they lock the sockets onto the rack with a quater turn and the base is magnetic so if i had to go do a job in a bay far away from my box i just grab the rack and stick it to the lift post... pretty nice but i think they were pricey

So I have a lot more sockets than that. BTW - that wrench drawer nearly gave me a heartattack. I'd just use the adjustable too as someone else said if I had to sort through my wrenches every time

but because I was removing a gearwrench from the combo wrench holder and broke the damn thing ,I'm skipping those plastic pegs type socket holders and staying with the metal bar and sliding clip type. I have the Craftsmans type with handles at the end. Steel is real ,I know its just a peg for a socket but now I can imagine dropping something on them sitting beside me doing a job. Like breaking them off with my impact dropped on them.
