Default In addition to what these guys have said so far, there are also magnetic tray liners available...

You could label the surface, and simply place the socket down and it would stay in place... I personally use rails because I like to be able to bring my tools with me to friends, track, etc.

Default i got a couple "mechanic's time saver" racks off the snapon truck

they lock the sockets onto the rack with a quater turn and the base is magnetic so if i had to go do a job in a bay far away from my box i just grab the rack and stick it to the lift post... pretty nice but i think they were pricey

Default The Audi is only one of the many cars I work on

So I have a lot more sockets than that. BTW - that wrench drawer nearly gave me a heartattack. I'd just use the adjustable too as someone else said if I had to sort through my wrenches every time

Default I bought the wrench holders from Summit Racing and was going to get the socket ones too

but because I was removing a gearwrench from the combo wrench holder and broke the damn thing ,I'm skipping those plastic pegs type socket holders and staying with the metal bar and sliding clip type. I have the Craftsmans type with handles at the end. Steel is real ,I know its just a peg for a socket but now I can imagine dropping something on them sitting beside me doing a job. Like breaking them off with my impact dropped on them.
