Is this noise from the blow-off valve or something else?

Now that the weather is not real cold anymore, the following noise has come back. Between shifts as RPMs drop thru 3500, I hear a shrill-like sound. It's somewhat like a rattle, but not really. It happens roughly half the time - some rides never, some rides every shift. I'm guessing it has to do with the blow-off valve, because that's just when it would be open/opening (I believe).
Anyone else have this noise? Any advice? Thanks!
Tom
'98 1.8TQMS Silver/Ecru (moan/groan-less, but with a shrill now)

Related to my noise between shifts, what is the wastegate supposed to do just after pressing the clutch pedal down to the floor between shifts (rpms have peaked around 3500 to 4000 and are just starting to come down).
I'm wondering if I'm getting a wastegate failure warning of some sort...
Tom
1.8TQMS

Related to my noise between shifts, what is the wastegate supposed to do just after pressing the clutch pedal down to the floor between shifts (rpms have peaked around 3500 to 4000 and are just starting to come down).
I'm not an expert on turbos but I believe the wastegate bleeds off the excess pressure the turbo creates. In-between shifts it would open to release the excess pressure. When the wastegate rod breaks, it basically holds the wastegate open which bleeds off the pressure all the time, thus the boost created by the turbo is never fed into the intake so the engine behaves like a normally aspirated 1.8 liter.
Andy Hedin
'97 A4 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar, ABT Filter, Euro Headlights...
