I just purchased (my first) Audi, a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro. I love it; however I have noticed a whirring noise at startup. It lasts for about 45-60 seconds and then stops. Being new to the car I was just curious if this is something I should be concerned with or if it is commonplace. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

and do you notice the rpms sit around 1200, and then drop to 800 once the noise stops (30-60 seconds later)?
If so, it's probably the smog pump. It helps the cats heat up quicker to reduce cold start emissions.

On a lot of cars that noise has turned out to be the accessory belt tensioner. It's pretty easy to put a wrench on the tensioner and either increase or decrease tension while somebody revs the motor. if you can change the tone of the sound with the wrench then replace the tensioner. It's pretty hard to say that's what it is through the internet. If you posted an audio clip of it I'm sure someone could tell you exactly what it is.
My car just kept getting worse until the noise was a full howl and didn't go away for three or four minutes after start up.
