Obsession with Power???

I've just returned from Europe (Italy), where there are virtually no BIG engines on any model car - most cars are diesel, and even the gas models are usually 2.0's or 2.5 or smaller. 95% stick as well. Germany has bigger cars with bigger engines, but even there most of the Audi/MBs/BMW's have smaller engines or diesels.
These are countries where the actual power could be useful - autobahn or passing on many of the one lane country roads.
However, in this country, where most people never have driven their cars over 100mph more than a dozen times in their lives, we sit around talking about our 350 hp/ 0-60 in 4.9 seconds when infact this power is completely wasted, as is most of the performance.
I just picked up a 1.8T, and it has more power than I'll ever need. Furthermore, I get to actually drive it over 5000rpms - something virtually impossible to do in say a Porsche, unless you feel like spending the night in jail.
