Odometer issues

Ok, so i've searched around the forums to no avail.
i recently replaced some bulbs in the instrument cluster... was glad when the stuff lighted back up when I stuffed everything back. BUT... I noticed the LCD panel for the odometer is fubar. It's not lighting up. I have a sneaking suspicion isn't not another light bulb... but the LCD panel itself. Has anyone had success resolving this issue in the past?
Or... do I just have to get a new cluster meow?

allright meow... last thing before I go out and plop down some $$ for a replacement cluster:
anyone know which wire/pin in the back connectors feeds the odometer?
(yeah yeah I'm a cheap bastard... don't own a repair manual... yet)
fyi I already looked at 1.8T's page. it's for 97+, and the wiring definitely doesn't correspond to my cluster (unless I'm retarded... which is a 50/50 thing these days).
thanks in advance for any help.

the LCD is actually working. it's just super super dim. i just went outside and took a close look at it, and there, voila, the numbers light up.
