Turn the filter enough so that you can unscrew it easily with your hands, but not enough for the oil to start dripping.
Put a heavy duty plastic bag around the filter and wrap it also around the oil cooler and secure it (with some rubber bands for example).
Now, unscrew the filter while it's in the bag, let it fall off into the bag (make sure the bag doesn't have holes), and wait another 15-30 mins for all the oil to drip from the oil cooler.
Gently remove the bag with the oil and filter in it.
I managed not to splill a single drop of oil when I did it last time.
As far as quantities, with OEM filter - 3.7 quarts; with oversized OEM filter - 4.2 quarts.
