Default Oil Change Interval

98 A4 Quattro, 2.8 5spd 18,000 miles. I generally change the oil and filter around 3,000 miles. Recently I let it go around 5,000 miles. The point I would like to make is there is a great difference in the engine performance after the oil wears beyond 3,000 miles. I will never let it go much beyond 3,000 miles again before changing the oil and filter. I have been using Pennzoil 15w/40. I always changed the oil and filter in my Saabs and Volvos at 3,000 miles. I think it is crazy to wait for the free one at 7500 miles. What is your opinion?

What is your basis of engine performance degradation for 3000+ mile old oil?

Have your oil tested at 3K... still plenty of life left in it. 3k interval is marketing hype. JMHO

Default actually, I take back the word degradation as I just assumed that was what was happening to engine performance as you mentioned...

I do mine at 7500. Partly because I have a guilty conscience dumping oil more frequently to recycle centers which in turn just creates more waste for mother nature, another, cause I use full Synthetic or synthetic blend in all my cars or friend's cars. Oil appears to have a lot of life left after 5000 IMO.
