Default Oil changes not under warranty? WTF?

/begin rant

I just had the service manager tell me that the oil should be changed every 8000km's (5000 miles) but that I would have to pay for oil changes out of pocket except at 8000km, 32000km, and 64000km.

I thought all maintenance was supposed to be covered for 4 years/80,000km (50,000 miles)?!?!?!?

WTF?

/end rant

Default theres a difference between scheduled and unscheduled

oil changs are scheduled at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50k miles and so on on 2000/2001 models. May be every 5k miles on older cars.

If you want it changed more frequently, do it yourself.

Are unscheduled oil changes necessary? Recommended?

Default well...

If you ask Audi, no. They scheduled the maintenace the way they did for you car for a reason. Check your service manual for what yours are. I know for fact MY2001 is 5, 10, 20, 30, etc. I believe 2000 is as well. Earlier models may be different.

Many people like to change it every 5k and do the 15, 25, 35, etc themselves. It costs less than $20 for the filter and oil and only takes a little bit of your time and a little bit of a mess. You can buy inexpensive Rhino ramps and an oil bucket and your ready to go.

Default What about the kind of Oil, anybody know? they just put Conoco 15w40 in my 1.8t. Did they screw up,

if they say it's fine, will AOA back them up, or tell them to change it?

I only use Mobil 1 0w-30, 0w-40 and 5w-30. I'd say 15w-40 is too heavy for the 1.8

Default Whats Audi's take? Are the extra necessary?

Even with 5000 miles on the oil in the car before I get it changed its still pretty clean. I suppose the engineers that designed the engine know whats best for it. The old saying "every 3000 miles" was better for older cars, even my 98 Wrangler would dirty oil in just 500 miles worse than my A4 does in 5000. Just takes some getting used to...and make sure the level is where its supposed to be..
