Update:

Replaced my Mobil One filter with a Mann filter with no help.

Replaced valley pan check valves with no help. Sound maybe coming from driver side now and continues regardless of RPM.

Took to shop and oil pressure/pump was tested good.

Technician removed driver side valve cover and noticed no oil in upper head. He removed check valve in head and blew air into oil passage. Sound disappeared for couple miles until tech jumped on highway then sound came back. No oil in driver side upper head again. Maybe some carb cleaner in oil passage in case it's a sludge problem?

Sounds like I have blocked oil passage. I'm planning on removing that check valve again to see if I an clear it out without removing the head.

Anyone have any suggestions to clear the oil passage without removing the head?

Thanks.

Rent an aircompressor if you dont have access to one. Then grab some fittings for it and im sure you can figure out the rest. This should clear out the blocked oil.

I'm not certain if the blocked passage is in the head or in the block. Would like to narrow it down. Does the supply line to under valve cover pick up oil from under valley pan, or is it a direct shot from oil pump? I was thinking about pulling the oil filter as well invade it in block.

Also, using an air compressor do I have to worry about blowing out any seals? What would be a good pressure so I don't overdo it?

Ever find an answer to the ticking? My '96 A4 quattro is at the dealer as we speak and they are about to replace the check vales. Hope you respond and thanks in advance.

On the 2.8 AFC itself, nothing that failed. Maint. parts, vacuum lines;ICV twice;power steering pump that was noisy @ -20 degrees but worked fine.Run the short filter with 20W50 in summer (conv. oil) and 10W40 winter.Toronto area,Canada.Burns about 1/2 litre oil per three tanks gas now. It could use some valve seals which I may do if it makes it to the next timing belt interval.Just put on two new downpies with cats and front O2 sensors. All my codes went away including my long tome P1101 and P1106 airleak codes. Now 466,000km.

My '96 A4 is at 184K miles, and knock on wood no valve noise even though I let it shift at 6200 several times a day! I like Mann filters and use 5W-30 synthetic year-round.
