doesn't seem like a true thorough oil change to me. I do it the normal way and pour a half qt of new oil through, for good measure, to clean anything left out while the drain plug is still off. That looks like a tool for the lazy! =-P

however I feel that pulling the drain plugs allows more gunk or particulates to be removed from the system.

i also use a motive power bleeder for the brakes.
you cannot interchange them as one is pressure, the other vaccuum.
if you are looking at a vaccuum bleeder for the brakes then you could use it for both purposes. my audi dealership switched to vac brake bleeders a year ago and the audi techs hate them. nate said it is much nicer pushing fluid than pulling it. quicker too.

fwiw, boats use vac oil extractors all the time. it's not like they have a drain plug in the bottom of the hull.
regarding the particulate removal, it's anyone's guess. if there is a lip inside the pan around the oil drain then pulling the plug won't get everything out either. having never seen the inside of a b5 oil pan with my own eyes i can't say one way or another. i have, however sucked the oil out and then removed the drain plug and got only a couple drips. that -to me at least- means the pan was empty.
