Default Ahhh, I didn't open it.

I had to take off within minutes of scanning through the forum. Looks like I'll get one too.

Default I can help you out."Euro" 5w-30 is thicker and works great.Plain USA 5w-30 is too thin.Anything w-40

is what you want. Pick the "w" rating for the cold temps you ecounter over the oil's use. 0w and 5w-40 is a synthetic, needed to make the colder 0w/5w ratings without getting insanely thick at far sub zero temps, but not thin too much at operating temps, the +100C (+212f) where the viscosity is rated. 10w-40, especially a blend is what is most ideal above zero F. (frankly, a 10w-40 high-miles, like MaxLife is the best choice) and there is a 15w-40 diesel-rated oil that will resist burning off and help clean the engine, but is best used above +20f. 5w-30 Euros include MaxLife Synth and Dealership Castrol SLX Pro and maybe a few others, one being Castrol GTX Hi-Miles 5w-30 (awesome) and a Euro 0w-30 like Syntec 0w-30. Plain 5w-30 is a total skip unless it's Artic temps and you can't afford synth. I hope this helps.

btw- it's too bad the oil selector sends you to 5w-30, it takes a 5w-40 to meet VW specs. Try Castrol USA yourself and I see the Castrol UK site says 5w-30 Edge, a thicker Euro 5w-30 like the Dealer SLX Pro, maybe the same.
