Oil pressure questions-strange

Ok so I have a 1997 A4 1.8t.
I sold it to a guy from NY. I drove this car for around 400 miles, it was fine....
He drives it about 80, oil pressure light comes on. What does he keep doing? Well just what every idiot would.....keep driving.
He made it a mile or so and the engine shut down.
He chewed through the cam tensioner. Now this motors not sludged up at all. I'm wondering though what caused the issue in the first place? Bad oil pump maybe? Something sucked up into the screen?
The previous owner said he had nearly the same problem with it as well and his mechanic told him it needed a motor??? All I did was replace the turbo (shaft snapped in half) and I didn't have any issues?
Any ideas?

The engine is probably sludged internally. This failure of the timing chain tensioner comes when the tensioner doesn't retract. In the case of the one I have here, the screen on the tensioner was blown out and the tensioner was stuck.
I rebuilt the head on this one, and am cleaning out all the oil ports and rebuilding it.

"he chewed thru his cam tensioner"?
I assume you mean the cam adjuster?
if the cam adjuster plastic guide rails break - they typically fall down into the oil pan. Particles get lodged in the oil pickup tube screen. Oil pressure may be negatively affected if there is enough plastic stuck in the oil pickup tube screen.
Solution (if this is the problem)= replace cam adjuster unit. Drop oil pan, replace oil pickup tube (and maybe oil pump while you are in there). ensure no other plastic particles are stuck between the adjuster and the pan. button it back up.

No I got it from an auction unfortunately.....I mean I drove the car for over 300 miles, no issues...he has it less than 80 and the chain ate through the tensioner.
I figure that its going to be exactly what was posted above...new tensioner and oil pump.
As for the sludge, I don't know, I just find it hard to believe it is sludged internally when you can clearly tell the oil was changed. Has a pretty decent golden hue to it. That's VW's for ya
