After eliminating the valve cover oil leaks on my 96' A4 I found I had yet another. After a lot of cleaning I located the problem, there is a leak between what I assume is the pump and the pan. (Square rectangular box about an inch thick)

I don't have a book so I wanted to know what I'm in for. I don't see any cracks so I was thinking it's just a gasket. Can someone point me to a tech article describing how to replace a pump? Or any insight into what they think the problem is?

If you are talking about the rectangular box with the oil filter mounted on it and two hoses running to it, then that box is the oil cooler not the pump. The oil pump on the 12v V6 is integrated into the oil pan. If your oil cooler is indeed leaking then you should take the filter off and check for the o-ring and replace that if necessary. I have the same problem, but I haven't yet done anything about it. Let me know how it goes for you and keep us updated.

Thanks for clearing up that it's the oil cooler that's leaking. The leak is from the side between the cooler and the block and not the filter side.
I was able to find an article showing the replacement process. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116585

Now I have to decide if I just want to replace the o-ring or the whole pump.
