...because they contain detergents and all sorts of other good stuff.
I havent seen the exact product you're describing, but many 'engine cleaners' thin your oil to what I would consider alarming levels.
Do your car a huge favor and use synthetic - its your best defense against sludge and contamination, and it can actually help clean a neglected engine.

correct miles should not be a problem. An old ford straight six with 300 K and an oil change every 35K "if the ol'-girl needs it or not!!" is what that stuff is really for... even so I would not use it. If your concerned run good synthetic thru it a couple times with only like 1000 miles between changes.

I had a 65 tri-powered GTO and the lifters were noisy. After trying many different oil types and weights - I realized that it wad due to dirt in the lifters. I added detergent and in a few hundred miles they stopped clattering.
The other postings are right - if you change your oil regularly then you are OK as they contain detergents and will keep your engine clean. If you have gone a long time between oil changes then adding the extra detergent will help with any build up.
BTW - @ 80K I rebuilt the engine on the GTO at the Air Force base shop I was stationed at in Shreveport and the inside of the engine amazed all the mechanics and the other airmen there at how clean the inside was. Most metal parts were bright and no sludge - only a very thin film of grey on the bottom of the pan.
