Default Ok anyway to narrow down the cause of a over heating engine thermostat or water pump??

In a 2.8 qm when driving with the heater on the temp cools off with the ac on it verry quickly begins to overheat i noticed that the raidator fan does not increase speed as i think it should when the temp goes up any ideas..I have ordered parts for a water pump and timing belt hopefully this will fix my heating problem???

Default Water pumps don't usualy fail without making a noise. It would be possible for the impellar to come..

.....apart(depending on the material of the impellar.)Does the electric fan come on with the A/C? Is the belt driven fan easy to turn when the engine is cold and hard to turn when it is hot?
Have you tried letting the car run when it is cold and feeling the upper and lower radiator hoses compared to the temp gauge read hot (does the gauge start to read hot before each hose becomes hot?)
If you are going to put a T-Belt/water pump on,put a thermostat on while your doing it.

I assume you have looked to see if it has enough coolant.

Default Yes the eletric fan does come one i used it the other day with the heater on to make it home with

out overheating my engine but i sure got really hot even with the sun roof and windows down it was 91 outside..and 108 inside my car.
The Belt driven fan is easy to turn when cold not sure about when hot..? the hoses get really hot and the gauge is pretty close i believe but not 100percent sure about that. I also ordered a thermostat as well all from germanautoparts .com i had to call it in though nice people there...And yes i do have plenty of coolant in the system I will need to get more since i am also planning on flushing out the raidation anyways while i have it removed.so...Hmmmm
The only thing i dont get is why would the belt driven fan not speed up when the engine is getting hot mine at this time stays at a verry slow rpm..thank you Dave

Default You may have a bad fan clutch(viscous coupling as or Scottish friend called it.)

It should be very hard to turn when it is hot.If you need a T-belt,you should replace the thermostat and water pump while you are doing it. No extra time to replace the fan clutch while you're at it.
