Default OK, everyone please "school me" on some TDI block issues - Jetta vs Passat 1.9 differences.

I have read through the archives "they (jetta TDI) won't fit the A4 B5" - but nobody mentions EXACTLY why.

My question: Not factoring in intake/exhaust manifolds and related will it bolt up to the transmission/clutch with moderate ease?

I understand the Passat motor will bolt up - can anyone provide me with a clear (not a guess) answer as to the differences between the two blocks? I have tried to find a picture of both blocks to compare them to no avail.

Default No ideas. I can only assume that the blocks are the same. VW isn't in the habit...

of making 30 different blocks, they seem to love re-using blocks from model to model. Heads, and other stuff, it's anyone's guess.

Default Drrr... ;-) Yes, but will it bolt up and retain the same clutch etc?

Obviously mounts, manifolds wiring etc is needed to be made/modified....

Oil pan issues maybe?

Default I guess since i can't seem to find pics/specs I need to go to a salvage yard and "play". ;)

I have spent hours on TDI forums to no end. LOTS of info on Jetta/golf motors, but very little on the B5 Passat - and no crossover type info at all.

How about a little ETKA research? You could look up bare blocks to see if they are the same.

Default LOL, yes I am. FWD FT-LOOOOOOOse ;-) I also can't stand the looks of the Passats.

The Jetta wagons I actually don't mind too much, but the interiors are a little "meh" to me.

Still... fwd bugs me.

If I go away from the Audi it will be way away - like to a RWD E30 BMW "Touring" Wagon with a diesel swap. (Easy swap with the RWD and older less electronic chassis.) Plus I have always LOVED the E30 body for some reason. (the wagon is quite rare too)

RWD > FWD even in the snow with good weight distribution and good tires IMHO.
