assuming both wheels are the same brand, both are 8" wide, both have 225 tires on 'em.

One setup has less metal, one setup has less rubber.

Superleggera's with Kumhos for example.

Which is lighter?

Default No definitive answer

Most tires seem to be between 20-25lb, so it depends on the wheel. The OZ SL or SSR GT1 are both under 20Lbs in 18", so I believe that 18" would be lighter. On a wheel like the Oett. RE, a 17 "should" be lighter.

Default (edit) I know it doesn't make much sense, but the 225/40/18 tires weigh more than 225/45/17...

Toyo T-1S:

225/45/17 - 20.9 lbs
225/40/18 - 22.0 lbs

Kumho 712:

225/45/17 - 25.2 lbs
225/40/18 - 25.4 lbs

Maybe they have to pack more steel belts into a lower profile tire to make it stronger???

Whatever the case, this would indicate that a 17" rim/tire combo is lighter than 18" rim/tire combo (assuming same rim and tire model, just different sizes).
