Default Okay, I've done the searches, and now i'm sh*ting in my pants. I have 74K and I need to

change my timing belt ASAP. One problem, the dealer wants $1050 for the belt, h20 pump, thermostat, and tensioner.
Anyone know of a very reasonable place to get the work done? I'd do it myself (I have all the tools) but I live in an apt building and can't work on cars there.

Any recommendations in the LA/SFV/Thousand Oaks area?

Thanks

Default If you can do it yourself then rent a space.

Or check with local community colleges. They frequently have auto courses where you can work on your own car.

Default Is it DIY?

How difficult is it to replace the timing belt, water pump? If you know a bit about cars about how long does it take and cost of materials?

Default $250+ for parts, it's DIY if you're technically inclined, 8-12 hrs...

Personally, I would not do it (you gotta take the whole front of the car apart, brrrr...), but some people have done it here without any problems. There is also a good write up about it on this website.

Default that's what it costs for that kind of service, this of it this way

if you don't get that done and the timing belt breaks and the engine siezes it will cost you like 5 X that for the fix. so just bite the bullit and get it done, mine was about that too.

Default Check if there is an Audi Club in your area.

Sometimes you get access to a garage with the lift for a minimal fee just by joining one.

Is your car 1.8t or 2.8? If it's 1.8t you better do it ASAP. If it's 2.8... well, still do it ASAP, but I'd worry a little less.
