I've been leaving the S parked outside in 15 degree weather over the last two weeks...and I just realized...as much as this gearbox sux, I don't get a crunch going into second gear, even after parking the car in 15 degree temps overnight.
Soooooo, since the 2nd gear crunch on the A4's is fluid related...did Audi spec a different fluid for the S4 (mine's a 2001.5), and if so, can that same fluid be used in the A4? I thought I remember reading a post indicating that Audi switched over to synthetic in the S at some point, but I could be very wrong here. It's just a vague recollection.
Anyway, maybe there is hope? And for those of you still crunching into second gear, do a search on double clutching...that'll clean up the cold 1-2 shift quite a bit.

about Audi switching to a synthetic tranny fluid on the S4, somewhere around 2001/2002.
I get a lot of crunching shifting into 2nd when it's very cold outside and the car is not warmed-up, and that's on top of my shifer linkages being very notchy to begin with. I was thinking about changing the tranny fluid to Redline MT90, but have never gotten to do it. I'll try again before next winter hits :-)

by my mechanic, along with BG Synchroshift II, but I can't remember if the latter one is fully synthetic. I know that MT90 (75w90) is definitely synthetic.

I'm really not going to check with my dealer on this...I'm suggesting that you guys check with your dealer on this. Ask them for a bottle of whatever is spec'd for the 2002 S4 tranny, then ask them to check the specs on that vs. whatever is spec'd for the A4 tranny.
You could use the redline as well based on the posts below.
