my first impression was...this car is too big. The doors are huge and only accentuated by the flat panels. Audi truly was going for the luxury look and not the sporty look/feel that I think all the previous years A4s possessed. Also-
The wheels arent anything to write home about
Interior fits the lux look but not my taste..seats are comfy though
Fit and finish is awesome..typical Audi
The lower panels are F**in ugly even on the two black models I saw (why does Audi do this?)
Headlights are cool but that stinkin chrome trim piece pulls your eye down to the ground
Overall...I did not drive it so cant comment on performance, but I have to say I really didnt even want to. The car would look cool with mods etc...but then again I want a sporty lookin car out of the box.
BTW: You could buy a clean used S4 clean for the same price. Go figure.

Couldn't live with the wheels. My brother commented "If you buy that 02 s4 or 02 A4 you better make the dealer switch out the 01 A4 celebration rims cause those are ugly".
Also Perhaps a body kit and such would make the new model more color matched. Ever since the All-road quattro wagon "plastic beast" came out, thats what I think of.

... but there are many happy people on this board eagerly awaiting arrival of their '02 A4s. No one car is going to please everybody, but the new A4 is an improvement over the old A4 in almost every way.
I loved the look of my '96 the first time I laid eyes on it ... and still do. But everything needs updating sooner or later, and I think Audi did a good job. I'm not crazy about the rear end of the car, but it could look a lot worse (i.e.: Maxima!)
As far as the dark lower panels on the new A4, Audi designers did this as a visual styling cue designed to hide some of the depth of the car's body. It doesn't bother me a bit.
If you're happy with what you're driving now, then by all means keep it. As for me -- and many others on this board -- I can't wait until my new 2002 A4 arrives!

If this is true.....then why are the A6's lower body panels painted. I compared both the A6 and the 2002 A4 side by side at my dealership(which both look almost identical, except that the A6 is bigger) and the A6 looks much sharper because those lower panels are painted.
I think that is the MAJOR flaw in the 2002 A4.

it went from luxury sports sedan to sporty luxury sedan. The results are painfully obvious... after spending close to $40k you need another $5k for full body kit and wheels just to make it look sporty. YIKES! And even with the V6, 220HP pushing 3500lbs is nothing to write home about. Yes, it's now a porker too!

the A4 is an A6. But the A6 (with lower body panels painted) looks MUCH better than the 2002 A4 with the black lower panels. There's no need to get your panties all tied up in a knot and be an ******* about it!!!!!
