I think too many people were beginning to think there was a corporate connection (I mean there is, but you know what I mean)...
I just remember reading somewhere that audi was looking to move away from it...
why? I think it is a pretty good connection to have... I would imagine it helps the sporty image... oh well... my dealer is an audi/porsche dealer...

In the 1960's Porsche contracted with VW for NoAm distribution. VWOA wanted separate VW and Porsche dealerships. It attempted (the US Supreme Court later ruled this illegal) to "force" its Porsche dealers to sell VW's upmarket car, Audi, alongside Porsche. Dealers tended to keep their Porsche and Audi lines together under one roof even after Porsche pulled away from VW and created PCNA around 1980.
