Default Overheated 1997 1.8t. My son drove it w/ no coolant. New head or new engine?

1997 1.8t w/ 130k miles.
There is no compression in the first two cylinders. I can get a new head for around $1,500. Or, a new engine for around $3,600. Obviously, a new engine is better. But, it would be nice to get out of this for only $1,500. What are the chances that the engine will be ok with just a new head.

Note: I already executed the son.

Default You have to decide to roll the dice or not.

Pull the head and see what you have.

Could be ahead gasket, could be pistons. No way to tell over teh intarweb.

BTW, plan on adding money for a new turbo sometime soon.

Default Re: You have to decide to roll the dice or not.

Does anyone know how likely the it is for something other than the head to go wrong when overheated on this particular engine?

Default Didn't you post this last week?

I thought we covered this...and if it wasn't you, then search through last weeks posts. You'll find the exact same scenario (idiot son and all...) with recommendations.

Default The block is cast iron, not aluminum...

which means the block is more resistant to warping...but certainly not impervious. I'm not sure there is anyway to tell without at least getting halfway into the head replacement job...of course that means if there is a problem, you've paid for half of the head replacement + a new engine install. So as Unpimp initially said...roll the dice.

Default Any turbo car is likely to have damage from overheating.

You ( or the shop ) should have done a leakdown test or pulled the head. This is not something that I can guess at over the intarweb.

Yes, but didn't know the results of the compression test yet.

Default

It will tell you where the pressure is going.

Default Does leakdown test tell if block is bad? What does it tell?

I guess if the head is bad, the pressure would go into the cooling system or possibly outside.

If the rings are bad, it would go into the crankcase. Valves, crankcase too?

I wonder if I could rent the equipment to do a leakdown test?
