Default All you need is an air compressor.

Are you doing this yourself?

Default When you pull the head you will be able to see the side walls of the cylinders

you can see then if you need to replace the whole engine or not. If you warped the heads there is a good chance you wrecked the rings too.

Default I might do it myself

I might do the testing myself. Would likely have the work done by a garage in town.

Default It will not tell you if the rings are bad - if the head is warped. You can't isolate the cause

leak down tells you if it is rings or valves - or if you have a warped head/ bad gasket but not if multiple things are bad.

Default I don't see how he's going to be any better off with the leakdown.

I still think he has to pull everything apart to get a clear picture of what condition the engine is in. The leakdown doesn't really cost anything, but I don't think he'll be in a better position to make a decision as a result of it.

Default Welll.... if *all* the pressure from cyl one goes into two, then we look at head gasket

If some of it comes out of the crankcase, then we think pistons.

If it all goes into coolant, maybe head.

But really, ther eis no reason not to pull the head.

Default The pressure will find the path of least resistance...

but if that happens to be a BIG leak (say in the head), the air may never find it's way into the crankcase. So now he commits to a head gasket and whatever needs to be done with the head...but when he pays someone to take it apart, he finds there is more severe damage than originally thought. Or worse...everything else *appears* okay, and upon reinstalling the head, there is still no compression and leakdown #2 confirms another issue went undiagnosed.

If he was doing the work himself, it's not such a big deal, but if he's doing the diagnosis, and paying someone else to do the work, he's opening up a lot of liability for himself imho.

I've been down this road, and it bit me in the a$$...

Default So, this is the big question....... With this particular engine, is more likely...

With this particular engine, (1.8t)is more likely that a severe overheating would damage just the head, or would a severe overheating be likely to cause other non head damage?

Does anyone know anyone with this engine who has had engine damage due to overheating?
