Default Overheating with the AC on?

I recently bought a 1997 A4 2.8. While driving around with the AC on the temperature gets to about 3/4 on the gauge. When I turn it off it goes back to 1/2. Is this normal for the car? I checked and saw that aux fan was kicking on when the AC was going. Is there something that could be causing the car to get that hot with the AC on?

Any help would be much apprieciated.

The electric fan turns on when the AC is going so I dont believe it is dead. When I checked the coolant it was green and I read that this was not the correct color for the coolant for this car. Could that be what is causing it to happen? It does not get to 3/4 temp everytime.

You may have your AC system overfilled. Use a guage and check the pressure in the system. Let us know how it goes...

The original coolant in the 97 was green, however it's not the same as standard parts store green coolant. I would have thought if the timing belt had been done it would be the new style G12 by now.

However that's not the reason for the overheat.

Does the high speed work on the electric fan? Does it overheat at idle or when you are during normal driving? If at idle maybe your viscous fan clutch is no longer working in which case at idle with the AC on the electric fan has to work overtime.

I flushed the coolant and replaced it with the new G12 and it didnt overheat once yesterday. Took it around town and the highway with the AC on and off and the needed stayed at 12 o clock.

Is there a way to check if the electric fan is at high speed? I will hopefully check the AC pressure this weekend.

Thanks everyone for the help.
