At idle, test it to see what happens to the coolant temp. Be careful not to let it get past one tick to the right of high noon. Just observe, and if it starts to overheat, shut it down and pop the hood.
I'm puzzled as to why it won't overheat at idle. If it doesn't, then more than likely the fans, waterpump, radiator, and thermostat are okay. Not sure what's left at that point.

at high speeds the engine makes a lot more heat. IF for some reason the impeller is not on the shaft, or it's just not up to snuff for some reason, it would do what caddidle is saying. A blocked or stuck thermostat might have similar results.

I've had one go in my audi 100 and I know that sound plus my heat works... ... what I noticed this morning was that if I raise the RPM of the motor... the clutch fan doesnt speeed up with the engine just keeps on spinnin slow like the clutch isnt grabbing.... so the faster the engine goes the faster that fan is supposed to turn and its not turning from the looks of it I messed with it and looked at it several times....

I've had it so hot the overheat light went off... that happened twice... havent let it happen again... but it would if I drove more than 2 miles... it gets hot reallly hot....not a good thing... gotta get it worked on tomorrow if I can find any shop to do it... from what I understand someone will have to take the front end off the car to get to the fan if they agree that that is indeed the case... I hope its not going to cost too much....

when there was a cooling system issue. Highway speeds sometimes alleviated the cooling system trouble, since airflow was naturally increased through the engine bay.
Caddidle...Kris could very well be right, but so far your observations fall outside the scope of the typical symptoms I've seen in my cars. I've had plugged radiators, leaking radiators, failing water pumps (bearings), stuck thermostats (stuck open), and probably a bad fan/clutch (went undiagnosed, because a poor college student was perflexed and too poor to bring it to the dealer). Every time I had an issue, I could never drive in traffic because the engine would overheat...most of the time, driving on the highway was fine though. :-/
