Default Paging Kris Hansen :: Re your control arm ariticle

First, thanks for the <a href="http://www.kris-hansen.com/Audi/upper_control_arms.htm">write-up</a> on your webpage.

But I'm wondering if it's absolutely necessary to undo the shock, mounts and everything else you mention just to replace the upper front (straight) control arm?

It looks like the only limiting factor is the bolt will not come out in it's current location, but I'm thinking a sawzall or hand grinder and a new bolt might fix that problem...

Any thoughts?

Default A sawzall?

That might get the bolt out, but how would you get a new one back in?

You have to remove the entire assembly to change the upper arms.

Couldn't the bolt go in reverse? Put the nut on the shallow side... Wouldn't that work?

Default Both sides are shallow

One side is the body, the other side is the spring.

Default I was thinking that it would fit between the spring...

...by varying the susp. height.

Guess not, oh well.

Default How would you get a new bolt in, if you have to cut the old one out??

Best bet is just to take it out, since you have to take the pinch bolt out (which is by far the hardest part of the job) anyway, just take the whole thing out.

Besides, you can barely get wrenches in there, how do you plan on getting a sawzall in there, and where is the blade going to have enough room to make it's stroke?
