paging oil gurus: M1 0w-40 doesn't seem to cut it for summer track days, what should I switch to?

It's just that the turbo (and engine) likes the 0 at start-up and in the very cold temps. w30 is good, but w40 is better when it's available, especially how hot these 1.8T engines sometimes run. always warm-up before boosting, and cooldown before shutting off.
M1's Truck 5w40 is a really good ester based oil, and I'm not sure why it doesn't get the VW approvals.
search Audi Junkie's posts, as he is the oil guru here.

Excess wear at normal operating temp (+100c) and if your oil gets hotter, yes it's a problem.
"HT/HS or "High Temperature/High Shear" (ASTM D-4683) is an rating that determines the oils stability in a high temperature, high stress conditions. The oil's ability to withstand shearing and tearing is very important especially in a high RPM engine. The oil's ability to protect bearings, cylinder walls and rings, connecting rod bearings, main bearings, cam lobes and lifters, etc. is vital to an engine. For an oil to pass the ASTM D-4683, an oil must have a protective viscosity of 2.9 cP at 302 degrees F."

HDEO being the heavy industrial specs it carries (Heavy Duty Engine Oil). D1 is just not marketed to Euro service, but oks use in a gas engines with the API SL spec. VW 502 is a ppretty lame spec, based onthe generic ACEA A3 spec, plus cold-cranking and mpg stipulaions. As tough as D1/T&SUV is, it is poor at CC and who knows about the mpg??? Mobil would just assume you use speced 0w-40 and deal with the issues it has.
Shel Rotella Synth 5w-40 is another example of a HDEO with API SL that could not care less about VW specs. fwiw, any 5w-40 is suitable, but the HD ones are killerer.

figure it'll use up what I have left/started with on the shelf perfectly for the last 2 changes and the next change. then, it's time to buy more oil.
makes sense about the approvals and CC, mpg issues/marketing.
