I just put a Panasonic 8 CD changer in my 98 Avant. Autotoys.com is running a special for $225 incl. Blitzsafe adapter and shipping. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that even though the concert radio has only 6 buttons, the radio "seek" button will select all 8 CDs. The 8 disk unit is tiny and very light. The factory bracket needs extensive modification to accomodate the changer so I simply removed it and used some 3M industrial type hook and loop fastener strips (super-velcro). Works great.

That's a great price!
I got the same changer for my wife's '99.5 A4 and only had to make a few mods. I used a stack of washers for a side-to-side shim, since the 8-disc changer is smaller than the space allowed in the factory bracket, and I had to use a real long screw to reach from the factory bracket through the washers. 2 screws (one on each side) the changer it in the factory bracket, along with a couple pieces of wood as shims, underneath. Finally, I had to bend a tab in the back of the bracket (or is it on the side?) where the Blitzsafe adapter plugs into the changer.
So you can still use the factory bracket. The installation may not be plug-and-play, and it certainly isn't show quality, but it's quite functional, and it isn't too difficult.

I keep saying I'll get them up... but I still haven't scanned my pics of the install. Notes are online to peruse tho. Hope it helps.
-eric

No offense but your procedure is what made me decide to use super velcro. Actually I had it sitting on a piece of foam for awhile. That seemed to work just fine as a shock mount! I can't figure out where to connect the ground wire. Everything back there is screwed into plastic.
