Default Passat or A4?

Hey Guys,

I remember there being a Jetta vs Audi post a few weeks back, but now here's my version:

Passat vs A4

I know that both the Passat and our A4's are built on the same B5 chasis, and underneatch they're practically the same car.....along with the same AWD system even thoguh VW called there's 4-motion instead of quattro. But my question is, my friend is looking for a car and I suggested A4 of course, but I think he has his eye on a Passat. So I'm just curious which would you choose? Any reason A4 over Passat or vice versa? Both have AWD, I believe you can now get 5-speed with 1.8T on a Passat, where before you could only get tiptronic. Same body chasis, the only thing besides Audi/VW Style differences that really stand out to me is that the Passat looks alot bigger when next to my A4. Passat, even though it's same chasis as A4, looks to be more along the lines of an A6 family type sedan. While our A4's are more like the small more nimble sport sedan's, I dunno maybe it's just me, but please if you have any comments, opinions, etc, please post! Thanks =)

Default You want a family sedan - get the Passat, you want a sports sedan - get the A4...

I think it boils down to that pretty much. But of course there are plenty of mods out there, so even though a Passat may not come with a sport susp. from the factory, you can fix that later. But it's the overall image I guess. When you think of a Passat, the word "sporty" does not come to mind like it does when you think of an A4.

The Passat is a nice car too. So, it's personal preference in the end. Tell your friend to drive both cars back to back, and if he doesn't think the price difference is justified, then by all means there's no need to pay that price.

Default Re: Passat or A4?

I debated this issue for several months. I figured "why pay extra for the Audi if the Passat is basically the same car?"
I test drove a bunch of passats (both engines)including the four motion, which is a really nice car. I definitely wanted the all wheel traction. Then I tested the Audi A4 1.8T Quattro. It was all over. They are different cars no matter what you hear. The interior is special in the A4. The handling is better, the looks are sexier, it's just everything you want in a car. Every Passat owner who sees the Audi realizes that that is the car he really wanted...

Correct. Torsen center diff, EDL for the open front/rear diff. Same as Quattro IV
