Start from the beginning. Is your coolant level correct and bled properly?
How long since waterpump, thermostat has been changed. I would try to fill and bleed coolant first.
I would of done that before changing the ect out. But it's done.

First, don't run your car without the retainer clip that holds in your temp sender; the sender will pop out, along with coolant, when the system gets hot.
Second, be sure that you have purged the air from the cooling system. The left-side heater hose has to be pulled almost off the firewall pipe, to expose a small hole. This will leak out air, then coolant, as the air is purged out. You will need the plastic coolant tank lifted up as high as the hoses allow, and the cap off, plus the engine should be running. It helps to unplug the coolant level sender at the bottom of the coolant tank when lifting the tank up.
If your gauge still only reaches about 1/4 range, this could be a stuck open thermostat. I had to replace my 2.8's because it never closed. It's a fairly cheap part, but kind of difficult to get at.

What turbo510 said in the first sentance about the temp sender popping out, the same thing happened to me.
I drove almost a mile with no coolant, I think, but still alive 32k miles later. Only later did I realize I had a broken clip on the garage floor when I crawled back into the garage.
