I have a bet with my friend about his 1990 Audi 90 Quatro. He has a button between the seats that locks the REAR differential below 15mph ( at higher speeds it switches back off).. He says that the car is ONLY front wheel drive until the button is pushed to lock the rear differential. I say that power can be supplied to the rear tires REGARDLESS of what you set the button at. The only thing the button does is lock the two rear tires to move in unision (same RPM).
So what do you think.....is it only a front wheel drive system if the button is not pushed!!???
Thanks,
Joe

The Quattro system will send power to all four wheels, the differential lock will just lock up the rear diff. Older Quattros also had a center differential lock in addition to the rear (which could only be locked if the center was locked).

The button is a manual lock for the rear differential before the days of ABS and EDL (Electronic Differential Locking). The Quattro system now uses 1 Torsen (automatically mechanically locking) center differential and two (front and reat) open differentials that are "locked" via EDL.
