So I have a 1997 Audi a4 quattro 2.8 auto car drives great no problems with the trans woke up Togo to work car would not go in reverse through out the day I lost all my gears to it to a shop near my house they said the transmission range sensor was eroded and had water in it and also that my tcu would not talk to his computer ..I bought a rang sensor got a used tcu he said all u had to do was plug the tcu in and it configure it's self now he put the parts in and car won't shift into gear. Do u have to code the new tcu even tho it came for
Same model and year car??and how do u do this thanks

Is your new TCU exactly the same part number?

You will need VAG-COM to figure out what's happening.

I'm tempted to buy a "mechanics special" with the same issue. Forward gears work ok, but no reverse. I need to know if I can fix the problem BEFORE I buy the car, without spending anymore than a few hundred bucks. Is it possible?

Yes it is just the loss of reverse sounds like your transmisson range sensor is bad witch is most likely the problem iv researched and seen alot of people lose reverse and when they put the range sensor on it is fixed..the only problem is that the range sensor is a dealer part only and is 530$..now i lost all my gears because the transmisson computer shorted out
