Possible to replace Water Pump without Timing Belt?
99.5 A4 1.8T AEB engine
Is it possible to replace the water pump without getting into the timing belt? My timing belt has already been replaced 3k miles ago. Can you get at it by removing the alternator and power steering pump?
Thanks,
Thomas

Heh....No... (with an explanation)
No, you still have to put the car into service position and still have to do all the same work that you'd do to change the timing belt (including removing the timing belt). You can re-use the belt, but make sure it is put back on so it's spinning in the same direction as when it came off.
WHY ON EARTH would anyone change a TB and not change the waterpump? That is idiotic. They are extremely cheap and are such a complete pain in the *** to change that it makes zero sense not to do it when you're in there for a TB change.
Sounds like an extremely expensive lesson.
Cheers,

YES you can change a waterpump WITHOUT a TB change on a 99.5 AEB
How do I know? I did it. My waterpump failed after 30k and I changed it. You still have to do pretty much the same amount of work but yes you can.
I changed the ENTIRE housing. You basically remove the alternator and then separate the bracket that holds the PS pump. That bracket sandwiches the entire pump. No need to touch the TB.
As far as changing the TB without the WP I agree. It's not much more work at all so why skip it.

That sounds good, but let me ask you...
That sounds good, but let me ask you something: You said you removed the alternator and power steering pump, but did you find it necessary to remove the bumper and radiator?

the power steering bracket is bolted onto the block with 9 long bolts...
it pics the waterpump underneat it and to the block.
If you take off the alternator, and those bolts, the entire waterpump housing can be pulled out from behind the TB (i.e. oil pump shaft gear). You then replace the front of the waterpump, replace the waterpump housing to engine block o-ring, and bolt the PS support bracket back on...
