Default Potential oil filter interface unit problem?

Hello everyone - I'm hoping that some of you may be able to calm my nerves a bit here.

Last night, I changed the oil in my 1998 A4 2.8 Quattro in my garage at home. Everything went smoothly except for the oil filter. The Audi/VW filter installed by Scottsdale Audi about 4,000 miles ago was on extremely tight!!! I actually crushed the filter with the claw-type filter wrench. Now, I've been told that you shouldn't tighten an oil filter THAT tight. I learned that you should put a little bit of fresh oil on the gasket, hand tighten the filter and then tighten it slighly with a clamp-style wrench, less than 1/4 turn - barely tighter than hand tight.

What's worrying me is what happened to the oil filter sending/receiving unit that is attached to the crankcase (sorry, I don't know the technical term - it is the 3" to 3 1/2" box which the filter attaches to and has a hose attached to it). What happened when I was literally using all of my muscle and leverage to counter rotate the filter was this oil sending unit turned slightly anti-clockwise as well! There is this little metal right angle on the corner of the crankcase that keeps (I think) this thing from turning, but the corner of the sending unit bumped past the right angle stop (see picture). Needless to say, I couldn't get the unit turned back to its original position.

However, the unit seems to be working OK - The hose isn't crimped (that much that I could tell) and the oil filter is getting oil (got worm after running the car for 2 minutes following change).

Anyone think this is a problem? Why did the dealer put the filter on so tight?!?!

Thanks in advance!

Default That's an oil cooler,it has coolant recirculating through it. If it's not leaking oil or coolant,...

...I wouldn't worry. You can always remove it and repostion it.

Default Thanks! I guess keepin an eye on...

...the oil temperature gauge would be good because if there was a problem with this cooler, the oil temp rise would show up.

I'll keep an eye out for leaking oil & coolant there, as well. Its just that d*mn plastic cover thats got to be removed all the time...

Default Next time you change the oil look at the hex nut at the base of the filter mount.

You remove that and you can remove the cooler. It as a seal between it and the engine block.
