Default Power Steering Hose

1998 A4 2.8l Quattro 30v

Can you use just any normal type hydraulic hose for the power steering hose? This **** is expensive. 80$ per hose from dealer.

Default Which hose exactly?

I just replaced the high-pressure hose on my '97 1.8T. You think $80 is expensive, try $200 (list price) for this sucker. Luckily, it was the problem (it was hard to tell exactly where the leak was coming from). If it's a "low pressure" hose (ie w/o banjo fittings), I would imagine any hydraulic hose would work. Just me speculating though..... Good luck

Default That's actually the wrong one pictured...

..but yes, I did get the right one eventually. The one bolt at the rack is THE biggest PITA ever -- it's SOOO freaking tight in there, and I even have smallish hands. I didn't want to pull the rack...

Default yeah, that hose is a royal PITA to get to...

I had a hard time reinstalling it, even WHEN replacing the rack... the universal socket that my mechanic gave me really helped though getting it in and out.

Default Yeah, universal socket is a must have

But it was all fingers to get it started -- there was no way I could get the socket in there to start the bolt AND to see where it was going. Just a really really tight spot with limited visibility. I hope to never do that again :-)

Default oh yeah... i had to get both started by hand while trying to keep the...

f'in crush washers from falling off. I contorted my hands in ways it shouldn't have been contorted... finally got it, but it took a bit. Also didn't help the fact i was really hung over the day I did the rack on teh car
