Default Power Steering Pump Replacement - Bleeding problems

I replaced several hoses and the power steering pump on my 98.5 2.8. I filled the new pump with fluid, rotated back and forth a few times and have made sure the reservoir hasn't run out of fluid.

I've been cranking the wheel lock to lock with the front wheels off the ground. After ~10 minutes, I am still getting a shudder on center, and whining noise throughout most of the wheel travel. No bubbles in the reservoir anymore. I've checked the hoses and connections and have no leaks in the system.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Default did you prime the pump?

if not it could have an air lock... i take it you are doing this with the car running? Try doing it with the car off..

Default a comment....

With the B5, you'll need to have the car level(wheels on the ground). Skip turning the wheels side to side. With the engine running the air will bleed out. If the wheels are off the ground, making the front of the car the highest point, it tends to pocket the air up at the pump, allowing it to cavitate(read: very hard on the pump seals). Let the car idle on level ground for 5 minutes, checking the p/s level periodically. Then , go around the block with it. Check the level again, the majority of air should be out of the system.

Make sure the reservior is filled enough. It should be within an inch from the top.

Default If the car has been sitting for a few hours all you need to do is...

Top off level. Don't turn the wheel. Start car and let run for less than 2 sec. Let it sit for 30sec and top off. Repeat this until the level stops going down and the fluid is not foaming. As soon as the pump is starved fluid it foams the fluid and it will take a long time to bleed all the air out. Trust me that this is by far the best way.

Default Car sat overnight, and I let it idle for a while in the garage. Air seems purged.

Felt great driving it for a short while. Thanks to all for the help.
