Is it true that I can hook up any Motorola phone to the existing wiring in my 1997 A4? The previous owner, (yes I bought it used, here in NYC it doesn't pay to have a new one!) had the Audi phone but took it to go when he sold it. What's the REAL story?
Thanx...

TX400 handset connects in armrest, tranceiver connects to DB25 connector. All works fine including A4 A-pillar hands-free mic BUT hands-free speaker thru concert radio does not work (even with optional motorola speaker module installed in TX400). So currently staying with the hands-free speaker internal to the TX400 which works OK.
Apparently the std Motorola phones don't wiggle/ground pin 10 correctly to get the Concert mute & speaker to work - I'm open to suggestions - someday I'll get a DB25 breakout box & try getting creative with a relay.
Still a deal ($120 from cell one) compared to Audi phone.

Motorola TX400

My A4 is a 1998.5, but I don't think this particular issue changed from the 1997 model...
I installed a Motorola PortaPak "bag" phone in my A4; just attached the transceiver to the DB25 connector in the trunk and the handset to the RJ45 jack between the front seats. The hands-free mike in the A pillar works flawlessly, but it does NOT mute the Concert stereo or use the speaker in the door, a minor flaw since the handsfree speaker in the phone works fine.
This particular model Motorola phone is very inexpensive, cheaper than the TX400 or the 2900.

The Motorola phones that work are dummy phones. The hand set is just a handset, and requires a transceiver. Handhelds have the transceiver, antenna, and all the electronics built inside. Handhelds require a hands-free kit to work like a dummy phone, but the hands-free kit that Motorola offers for their phones won't work with the Audi pre-wiring. (not without doing some serious mods to it anyway).

I have a 96 a4qm, which I bought used. The car has a transceiver in the trunk, an antanae, and the phone jack beneath the armrest. The guy took the actual phone with him. Is the transciever standard, or is it part of the Audi phone that you buy for like $350.00. Can I just get a handset and plug it in? This is so confusing. Can
someone tell me the whole story?

The dummy-type phones will not work without the transceiver. Its like taking the detachable face off a radio and leaving the rest.
As far as your question, It all depends on what kind of transceiver is there. If he had the Audi phone, you'll have to ask your dealer if you can buy just the handset, and it should just plug in and work. If he had another type of phone, you need to get the correct handset that will work with it. Provided he left everything intact, it should just plug in and work.
