Default PROBLEM: Cleaned my MAF and changed plugs and air filter yesterday. . .

I let everything dry really well. Checked for loose hoses, tightened everything, hooked back up the battery, did a trottle body adaptation and closed the hood.
I warmed up and got on to a main street and BAM---my car was back. RPMs went up to 6K, good shift points, good speed and then---it chugged and threw a random misfire code, lost power, and was back to crap city. Now my idle is even rough.

Dealer told me they though I needed a new MAF last week, but the diagnostic report was pretty much word for word as I explained the problems to the service manager when I took it in to for the recall. It is like they asked me what was wrong and then charged me $80.00. Did not even clear codes since I did not order the part right then.

I am really frustrated because the MAF is three days out, so that is why I cleaned it to see if that indeed was the problem.

Anyone have other procedures to verify that it is a MAF? Would I run rich or lean? My plugs go black really fast---gapped at .029 GIAC chip.

Can I test to see if it is running with trial VAG- COM?

Thanks for any information you all might have.

Default I believe the shareware vers of vag.com let's you see blocks 1-10.

MAF is block 2 or 3. You'll also be able to pull the codes, but they won't have descriptions attached to them, so you'll have to search AW for details. That should clue you into the problem.

Default I'm new to the VAG-COM obviously so some of the archive posts were unclear.

I'll keep searching. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Default do you have a full version?

I think anybody that does even the slightest bit of DIY work should own a full version. If for not other reason than being able to read the codes BEFORE the car goes to the dealer for repair. That information can save you a lot of grief if the dealer is either a crook or just clueless.

Default

Log Block 002 for the MAF reading. You can log with the demo software (no limitation on that block)

Default Just logged the 002 block. Is my MAF toast?

jumps between 3.4 low and 4.8 high g/s on idle
barely reached 80 g/s at 3rd WOT attempt 1 log
barely reached 110 g/s on 3rd WOT attempt 2 log
average 13.4 g/s at 2520 rpms

Cleared codes before and while loging got CELs
17708 - misfire probably low on fuel
16684 - Random Multiple Cylinder Misfire
16685 - cylinder 1 misfire
16686 - cylinder 2 misfire

Any comments or suggestions?

Default idle is fine. gotta log 3rd at WOT...

but 1st and 2nd look okay. In third you should see north of 150 or so.

If you're misfiring, I would start swapping plugs, injectors, and coilpacks between cylinders to see if you can isolate the issue. Swap one thing at a time (obviously) until you find the problem part.

If I made a guess, I might say the rubber boots below the coilpacks might be bad. They are pretty cheap and can be ordered separately from the coilpack. Swap them with the coilpacks between cylinders and see what happens. Also, examine the boot and top of the plugs for carbon traces (that's a good sign that you have some arcing going on around the plug). That's a shot in the dark. Like I said, do the swapping to narrow this down, and go from there.

Default I should have been more clear . . . I did log in 3rd. Ist attempt & 2nd attempt

barely reached 80 g/s at WOT 1st attempt
barely reached 110 g/s at WOT 2st attempt

Nowhere near 150 g/s at WOT

Thanks for your other suggestions Raj. I check it out.
