Problem with my A6 but relevant to A4 : wheel bearing noise
I have a noise from the front right, gets louder when turning left and really sounds like a wheel bearing. The dealer just replaced the front right wheel bearing to no avail.
Has anyone experienced a bearing failure that gets QUIETER when you turn away from it, ie at lower load?

Turning left puts the weight on the right front. If you still have noise after the wheel bearng was
replaced... did you rotate/replace tires to make sure they aren't causing noise as well?
The front left will take a lighter load when making a left turn.

And thanks for your advice! Partly I'm asking because...
the dealer is very reluctant at this stage to do anything, the more people have experienced similar problems, the more seriously they'll take it.
I called them and told them what you experienced but they don't really buy it! (I do BTW)

I didn't buy it either, till I talked to the tech that changed the bearing...
he found play in that bearing. I bet your dealer will find the same thing. you do not get noise without play.

One of my bearings was cracked on install. I noticed it because of excess play on the hub before
I re-installed the knuckle assembly. I had to take it back and make them put in another.

A comment.....
There might be a possibility that the bearing canted on installation or it might be getting time for tires. You'll need to do some testing.
Just as an example, our Boxster was just howling from the rear. It sounded exactly like wheel bearings until I checked it on a lift. The car badly needed tires. Lots of tread left, too much heat cycling.This might not be your case but its worth running down the possibilities.
I found the only way to really quiet down our 30v A4 was to just replace all 4 bearings and installed a set of Bridgstone G 009's.

Kris you may remember me posting that I had a bearing fixed last year and again
this spring . It is possible to get a new bad part. I work in another make dealership and I've seen it on more then one occasion and with several makes of cars.
