1. Timing belt (65k miles)
2. Control Arms, tend to wear down prematurely
3. Ignition Control Units (pre 99) are known to fail ($450 part alone), no way to tell until it fails
I would say that 80k is a little too much, just because the car is really expensive to maintain, UNLESS you do your own work, then it's just expensive.

And the same thing can be said about MB, BMW, and any other German car that comes in mind (maybe except VW... and be reminded that VW mechanics can usually help with your A4).
If you are afraid to put down $$$, say half of the cost of the car, to maintain it and do repairs, don't go German. Looking for a trouble-free machine? Go Honda or Toyota.
The A4's edge over the bimmer 3-series and other competing Euro pocket rockets is the price. And it's hard to pack all that stuff into a car and make it thousands less than the bimmers. So Audi engineers had to cut some corners, evident in several common problems manifest, timing belt, control arms etc...
But for reference, I bought my 97 A4 2.8 with 79k. 9 months and 4k later, it is just fine. And while that does not mean much, many people on the forum have well over 100k on their A4's and are still happy (if they can afford the repair bills).
