should the connection between the driveshaft and the rear differential be solid, or should there be some rotational play?

Not sure what you're saying. Does the center driveshaft have twisting play at the rear dif? Usually, thier failure is noted from thier front/rear play, and it "thunks" under hard acceleration. Or the center bearing goes.

and followed the clicking sound to just ahead of the rear differential. I could turn the drive shaft about 5-10 degrees in either direction by hand.

Then I'd agree with you as long as it's not differential play you're dealing with.
I do have a center driveshaft for a 1.8TQM if you're interested. $300.
