I assume you are asking whether or not an A4 with quattro is faster or slower than one without quattro. I have never driven a non-quattro A4 but given its weight advantage I would have to assume that is faster than an A4 w/quattro.

So off the line it will always be faster (with a manual transmission), but could be caught down the road by a FWD due to the heavier weight (~230 lbs.) that the engine must pull around. To offset the extra weight and slower acceleration, some models have lower transmission gearing that allow for faster acceleration than their FWD counterparts. Now in corners, the extra traction more than makes up for any weight penalty.

Quattro is made for primarily handling, NOT SPEED. Engines, Turbos, and superchargers are for speed.
If you want a good flattering "article on quattro"
The UR Quattro ruled the world rally circuit in the early 80's because it was the first car to have 4wd, The A4 quattro annhilated its competition in the Touring Car Championship races, and then quattro was later banned!!
Quattro on snow, ice, wet surfaces, gravel, mud, dirt will outperform any 2WD car. That is why Subaru,Mitsubishi,Ford,SEAT, Toyota and all the major rally car manufactures use 4WD systems, because in rallying as they say "REAL cars, REAL roads." Not a straight track launch pad wet and dry.
Yes FWD will look the same as Quattro if you have both cars for only a sunny weekend at the track, but if you own both for years and drive them thru all the conditions that mother nature throws at you, quattro will literally come out miles ahead.(because he wont stuck in the snowbank)
Just my $0.02 (well more like $0.05)

Compare a chipped 1.8T front driver manual tranny vs a chipped 1.8T quattro manual tranny.
There's where you'll see the difference.

Have you seen some of those "real world roads?" They might be considered "real world" by someone living in the boonies or a third world country. But for the average American, these roads call for something like a Jeep.
