is quattro full time AWD, or does it kick in when needed?

4Motion is made by Haldex in Sweden. Quattro in TT's uses this instead of a
Torsen based system like Quattro IV. Essentially the car is Fwd until 2degrees of wheel slip is detected then power is applied and removed where needed. IN THEORY this can give you forward motion with only one wheel's worth of traction.
It is very compact, too which is why it is used on the TT, Passat and Jetta. It is also used by Volvo.
Please don't turn this into an argument over the "real" Quattro. Quattro is a marketing term. Audi calls the TT's Quattro the same as the A4's Quattro. Thanks.

4 Motion on the Passat is the same system as Quattro; 4 Motion on the GTI and Bora (Jetta)....
....is the same Haldex-based system that's used on the TT.

VW/Audi have used the names 4Motion and Quattro for different types of AWD...
... quattro has been used as the name of a particular AWD system as well as a name for AWD in general. Stupid brand management over at VW/Audi went and played with the names.
For Audi, the A4 quattro is full time AWD while the TT quattro is based on the haldex AWD system that is front biased until needed.
For VW, the Passat 4Motion is full time AWD (Same as the A4) while the Golf 4Motion is based on the haldex AWD system (Same as the TT).
From what I understand, the haldex system is much more compact and light weight and also cheaper. The quattro system is a better design.
This is just info that I may or may not know.
