Default Quattro wheel spin

I'm trying to understand one aspect of the quattro system. I understand if only one tire has traction, then that tire gets the power. If all the tires lose traction then all spin, if there is no traction control? Is that right? So, in snow or ice one tire would not spin, but all 4 could?

Default i'm pretty sure that with ESP only tires w/ traction will get power and if all 4 start to spin it

will just hold power back on all of them. In rain i can take off and when the torque peaks (with ESP off) i can get all 4 to spin but with ESP on it will flash.

Without ESP, it's possible, but it still shouldn't be that severe.

If all else fails ESP will actually cut engine power... it's amazing how well it works....

Default The diff will distribute somewhere around 65% max to the front or rear.

So that means there will always be power to an "axle" regardless of the conditions. It can not send 100% of the power to any one axle.

Then, wheelspin is eliminated (side to side) by applying the ABS to the appropriate (slipping) side. Power is not redirected. If both sides slip, I think the wheels will just spin uninhibited by the ABS.

Typically, on an icey surface, you'll just break loose all four tires, but with four tires scrabbling for grip, you tend to get moving an awful lot quicker than if you just had one tire looking for grip.

Default Not sure exactly what you're saying, but ESP can cut engine throttle and/or apply ABS

on wheels independently. It can not redirect power to any particular wheels.

Differential braking is used both by ESP to control *car* spin and by EDL to control *wheel* spin...

Default Once I managed to spin mine 90 degrees almost on the spot.

Summer tires+freezing temps= hockey pucks for wheels. The car basically rotated in about 1 car length.
I was just experimenting with the amount of traction I actually had w. the summer tires (michelin Pilot SX). Turns out not very much...
