The styling is gorgeous, the interior is a work of art and the 1.8T is an awesome tuner engine. Even though I do have panges of guilt for not buying Quattro, it's not like the Frontrack = Yugo! Sorry, guess I'm just a bit testy today :P

That being said, I live in sunny California and made the decision not to get Quattro. Unlike some of the people who responded who think they know what they are talking about, I can tell you as the owner of a non-Quattro Audi that I love my car as much as they do. Do I miss Quattro, Hell no! I don't drive like a maniac and didn't need the extra weight, expense, complexity that goes along with Quattro.
I can hear the Quattro Jihad chants now! Quattro Ackbar! Quattro Ackbar!

For 02, the suspension design is the same for FrontTrak vs. Quattro. Prior to 02 this was not the case, and that was one reason to get the quattro.
The fronttrak will get you around just fine in Chicago, and what will make a bigger difference than quattro will be a set of 4 snow tires. I would take 4 snow tires, hands down over quattro in foul weather (if I was forced to choose ONE only). Quattro helps you go, but it won't help you stop or turn (which is where the snow tires come in very handy).
If you're a spirited driver, you'll certainly appreciate the $1750 quattro system. You'll even come to find it a bargain. While the fronttrak is a great FWD system, it still can't escape it's roots. It handles like a FWD car. Hit the apex of a turn, and nail the gas, and you'll promptly find the front tires have very little grip, and certainly not enough to steer and accelerate at the same time. With quattro, you have four paws on the ground, literally pulling you through the corner. With half of the accelerative forces withdrawn from the front wheels (and relegated to the rear wheels), you have much more grip up front with which to steer.
I chose to get the quattro system on the advice of people on this board. I also bought 4 snow tires/rims for the winter. Year round, my car is capable, confidence inspiring, and fun!
